Bovine imports significantly higher than previous year

Bovine meat imports for August 2023 amount to 2 044 tons and this represents an increase of 245 % if compared to August 2022, according to Agri Inspec.

The free-on-board price for August 2023 was R53.08 p/kg. This represents an increase of 27% in price per kg if compared to August 2022.

The major imports originated from Namibia with 224 tons. Live weaner imports for August 2023 amounted to 28 285 units, representing a decrease of 23% if compared to August 2022.

The price was R7 020.26 per unit, which is 13% lower than August 2022.

Sheep meat imports for August 2023 amount to 263 tons. This represents an increase of 47% if compared to August 2022.

The free-on-board price was R36.73 p/kg, which is 34% lower than the August 2022 price. The major imports originated from Australia (220 tons).
